Cortinarius privignus Fr. subgenus Telamonia Cap 4-7cm, conical to campanulate; hygrophanous, the center dark red-brown when wet, drying to yellow-brown; smooth and slightly shiny except the edge, which is coated with fine white veil fragments. Gills adnexed; pallid milky coffee to pale cinnamon at first, then much darker cocoa brown. Stem 40-90 x 7-15mm, base swollen, clavate; white covered in matted fibers. Flesh pallid with red-brown patches. Odor strongish, plantlike. Taste mild. Spores ellipsoid to pip-shaped, warty, 7.5-9.5 x 5.5-6.3µ, quotient 1.45. Deposit rusty brown. Habitat in hemlock and mixed woods. Uncommon. Found in Europe and northern North America, north of Tennessee. Season July-September. Not edible. Comment The dried material blackened slightly.
